Cowgirl Blues

Once again, a random trawl of what's available online has yielded gorgeous results. In this case, www.cowgirlblues.co.za.

  • They make clothing, accessories and decor pieces by hand from South African wool and mohair, using natural fibres. Animal fibres (wool, mohair) are preferred, as they’re more elastic than plants (cotton, bamboo) so they can stretch but retain their shape.
  • They work by hand because it’s more personal than machine made stuff.  As a result, all of their products have an individual feel and no two items are ever exactly the same.
  • They are environmentally friendly because it’s the right thing to do, so they minimise waste, re-use, recycle, go local, and generally pay attention to the environmental impact
  • They’re independent, adventurous and curious and constantly experiment with new ideas in their designs and business practices, which makes any interaction a fresh, interesting, creative and fun experience
About Bridget
cowgirlblues was started by Bridget Henderson, who worked in big corporate organisations (Bain & Co, Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, Unilever) both in South Africa and internationally, for many years.  She’s a medical school drop-out with an MBA from Insead who bought her first camera in 2001 in Kathmandu and discovered a passion for photography.  She also comes from a family of “makers” and both her mother and 87-year-old grandmother still knit.

Barbara Siedle at The Elizabeth Gordon Gallery

Durban born Barbara Siedle first studied at the Michaelis School of Art, UTC for one year. She then attended the Munich Academy of Fine Art in West Germany for three years, where she studied painting and sculpture under Prof. Kirchner.

She later attended the Natal Technical College where she studied sculpture for one year under Mary Stainbank. Barbara continued to broaden her experience in acrylic portrait painting, pottery, stained glass and mosaics in Durban, Salzberg, London and Munich.

Barbara has today established herself as a major watercolour artist, especially in the field of wildlife. Her first solo exhibition in 1982 was sold out within a week. Since then she has had many solo and group exhibitions with consistent success all over SA and the UK.

In 1995 Barbara was commissioned to do the 2 metre bronze statue of The Lady in White which is situated on T Jetty, Durban Harbour. She was also commissioned to do a bust of Vasco Da Gama, for the Portuguese Government, to commemorate da Gama’s arrival off the coast of Natal.

Barbara’s love of the bush and interest in environmental issues takes her on many journeys throughout Southern Africa to capture subject matter for her work.

Her work is currently on display at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery: 120 Florida Road, Durban.

Landskap/Landscape

On 27 & 28 January 2012, Oide Libertas in Stellenbosch will be hosting Landskap/Landscape, an experience of a combination of 18 male voices of the highest quality. A choice selected choir repertoire bridges the gap between the well-known and the obscure, between the exotic and the popular; presented in exceptional manner by choral musician Rudolf de Beer.

The fascinating combination of Strijdom van der Merwe's art, Antjie Krog's poems, and four dancers, intertwined with the guitar performance by James Grace, ensures an evening of enchantment.

The audience can look forward to, among others:

Edvard Grieg - I Himmelen (In Heaven); Calixto Alvarez - Lacrymosa (from Requiem), Franz Schubert - Psalm 23, Anna-Mart van der Merwe - Poetry reading, and the Stellenbosch Men's Vocal Ensemble.

This is an experience to be savoured!

Kirsten Goss: new inspiration for 2012

We can always rely on Kirsten Goss to be inspired by new and unusual designs. Her new earring ranges perfectly display her ability to gather ideas from all around the world.

Her "Titan" earrings channel the "under the sea" theme of high fashion's spring 2012 collections. Hand-formed shapes in sterling silver, clasped in an elegant 18ct gold framework: a play with positive and negative spaces in silver and gold.

And the "Oblique" diamond studs, inspired by the fluid forms of Henry Moore, comprise an asymmetric pair hewn from 18ct rose gold and set with round brilliant cut 0.35 vs1d/h white diamonds.

Both of these are currently exclusively available on the South African market. More information on these and all her other gorgeous designs is available on the Kirsten Goss website.
