Garden World's Annual Spring Festival

‘Nature’s Green Gold’

David Davison & Ray Hudson
27 July to 2 September, 2012

This year the Festival runs from 27 July to 2 September and will feature exciting Designer Gardens, the Gold Award Winning 2012 Kirstenbosch-SA Chelsea Exhibit, Gardens “Through the Eyes of a Child”, an Indigenous Exhibit by Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden & a Water Wise exhibit created by Rand Water.

Both the new & make-over designer gardens will showcase the latest garden trends & find clever solutions for small outdoor spaces, using a diversity of plants & natural hard landscaping products.

The emphasis in the make-over designer gardens section is on re-invent, re-decorate & re-vamp & this section of the show will offer plenty of inspiration for gardeners with a limited budget. To accommodate the increased gardens, the display area has again been expanded to allow for this permanent display – ‘Outdoor Rooms’ on view all year round.

Says Louis d’Hotman, General Manager of Garden World “We have found that the gardens become a
Tanya Visser
reference point for different styles, allow the comparison of diverse hard landscaping products & provide ideas for different planting combinations, especially as we change the plants with the seasons.”

Garden World is particularly pleased to be hosting the Gold Award Winning 2012 Kirstenbosch-SA Chelsea Flower Show Exhibit and is supported by Mogale City. The Exhibit is themed “Gateways – A Botanical Journey” and combines nature & our cultural diversity to create an intriguing combination of rich botanical biodiversity & iconic architectural elements offering glimpses into the land in which we live. The exhibit is rather like the diary of a traveler, the visitor is taken on a journey through changing botanical & cultural landscapes that show our unique flora against the backdrop of water-colour paintings of picturesque locations. This was the 37th year that South Africa was represented at Chelsea. Over the years it has won 32 Gold medals, two Silver-Gilt medals & three Silver medals.

In addition to the schools taking part in the children’s garden section, there will also be a number of smaller box gardens created by children from different schools. A number of events are also being planned just for children & includes pot painting mornings.

Margaret Roberts
Other events will be in the company of Herb Guru Margaret Roberts, also designer of the main display garden at Cop17 Leon Kluge, Horticulturalists David Viljoen & JJ van Rensburg and Radio Personality Lynton Johnson.

Entrance to the Designer Gardens & the Chelsea Exhibit is R20 pp & children u/12 years Free. For more information on the festival contact Magriet / Corné on 011 957 2545 / 011 956 3003 or 083 997 6142.

New York City’s Hidden Subway Station

Deep in the belly of New York’s subway system, a beautiful untouched station resides that has been forgotten for years with only a limited few knowing of its existence. Stunning decoration with tall tiled arches, brass fixtures and skylights run across the entire curve of the station, almost a miniature imitation of Grand Central Station… But it sounds like something straight out of Harry Potter, right?
It was opened in 1904, with the hope of making it the crowning glory of the New York subway system in elegant architecture and a place for commemorative plaques to honour the work that had resulted in such a successful underground mass transit system. It was to be the original southern terminus of the first ‘Manhattan Main Line’; however the station was closed and boarded up in 1945. The gem of the underground began gathering dust, forgotten by the general public, as passengers were forced off at the Brooklyn Bridge Stop before the train continued on to the terminus to make its turnaround.
The reason for its closure was that newer longer cars were required to match the demand of passengers that passed through the system. But as the stations tracks were severely curved, a dangerous gap between the train doors and the platform was formed making it an unsafe area. This combined with the fact that only about 600 people used it, resulted in its closure with only mythical plans of turning it into a transit museum. But this was never followed through.
However, now you don’t have to take my word that the secret City Hall Station exists, as the 6 Train will now allow the passengers who have been enlightened with the knowledge of its whereabouts to stay on the train during its turnaround and see the Station. You won’t be able to get off, but you’ll be taken for a slow tour of the platform and see what a beauty it was in its heyday!
And if that isn’t enough, The Underbelly Project has turned it into a kind-of off-limits art gallery. They are a group of street artists who have painted the walls of the unattractive concrete areas with their art in a spooky art exhibition that will be witnessed only by urban explorers who prowl the deep train system at night and Metropolitan Transportation Authority workers.
Over a hundred murals have been accumulated over time by graffiti artists, namely PAC and Workhorse (infamous NYC graffitists), who discovered the bare walls and invited others to add their art.
But if you want to go and view these art works, you will most definitely run the high risk of being arrested as venturing the tunnels is both highly illegal and dangerous! I’ll just stick to seeing the photographs as I’m pretty sure my search for art would turn into a horror story down in the black tunnels… or I’d get hit by a train.

Winter Warmer: Cauliflower & Potato Curry

This delicious-looking vegetarian recipe is courtesy of the Cape Legends Wine Club blog:

Something a little different to try for a weekday dinner. With loads of flavours, this mouth-watering dish with not disappoint.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 large onion , chopped
large piece ginger , grated
3 garlic cloves , finely chopped
½ tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp curry powder , or to taste
227g can chopped tomatoes
½ tsp sugar
1 cauliflower , cut into florets
2 potatoes , cut into chunks
1 small green chilli , halved lengthways
squeeze lemon juice
handful coriander , roughly chopped, to serve
naan bread and natural yogurt, to serve

Method:

1. Heat the oil in a saucepan. Cook the onion for 10 mins until soft, then add the ginger, garlic, turmeric, cumin and curry powder. Cook for 1 min more. Stir in the tomatoes and sugar. Add the cauliflower, potatoes and split chilli, seasoning to taste. Cover with a lid and gently cook for a good 30 mins, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender – add a drop of water if you need to, but it is meant to be a dry curry.

2. When the vegetables are cooked, remove the chilli, if you like, stir in a squeeze of lemon juice and scatter with coriander. Serve with your choice of Indian bread and a dollop of yogurt.
