Kentridge, Goldblatt to headline Prince Albert Art Festival – PArt – End September 2012

Prince Albert Gallery Press Release

David Goldblatt
Die Hel Interior by David Goldblatt
To mark the town’s 250th birthday celebration and the Prince Albert Gallery’s tenth anniversary, more than 30 of South Africa’s most renowned visual artists will be participating in the village’s first art festival.

The festival is scheduled for the weekend of the 28th of September 2012 and interrogates the theme of The Vulnerable Landscape. Artists will explore all aspects of landscape: interiors, the mind, urban renewal and destruction, the veld and closer to home, the beautiful and vast landscapes of the Karoo.
In addition to the Gallery, housed in the historic Seven Arches Building, other venues around the architecturally acclaimed village will be in use. “We wanted to include as much of the town as possible” said Gallery owner Brent Phillips-White. “We’ll be offering lectures and workshop as well as the exhibitions in some of these venues.”

He said art lovers will find work by painters, photographers, ceramicists, print-makers, sculptors and land artists at the festival.

Prince Albert Gallery co-director, Mary-Anne Botha explained: “The arid Karoo is vulnerable to climate change and human intrusion. Water for food and settlement is scarce. Fossil water held in deep aquifers is irreplaceable.”

An exhibition will be curated featuring Karoo artists’ response to the threat of fracking. Workshops will be on offer by photographer Louis Botha, Jill Trappler and reduction woodblock printmaker Joshua Miles. Art-related movies and lectures will be presented in the evenings. Artist JP Meyer and designer Jacques Erasmus will offer a cooking course at the town’s recreational cooking school. Restaurants around the village will host dinners with guest artists.

The Gallery will be updating its website regularly with additions to the programme.

AND

Bits and Pieces by Gerald Baise

This exhibition is Baise's second at artSPACE durban and once again involves Baise’s fascination with wood - laminating, chiselling, rasping, sanding and deconstructing.  Simply shapes without philosophical import that is pleasing to the viewer and engender a desire to touch and feel the wood.

Biography: Gerald Baise studied with the late Basil Jones for several years and has had 5 previous sculpture exhibitions.  He works almost exclusively in wood both indigenous and imported. The main focus is on simple shapes manipulating the wood to achieve this with little emphasis on the grain.

Exhibitions close on 26 May at 2:00pm

Theo Paul Vorster at the SA National Print Gallery

Opening on Saturday, 05 May 2012, the South African National Print Gallery is proud to present a collection of hand-coloured lino prints by Theo Paul Vorster.

Theo Paul Vorster was born in Oranjemund, Namibia and currently resides in Cape Town, South Africa. He started taking art classes at school and went on to study BA Graphic Art at The University of Stellenbosch (S.A) specializing in printmaking. He pursued Art full time from 1996 onwards. Originally only focusing on silkscreen and etching, Theo started experimenting with Lino in 2006 as he was looking for other print mediums to work with. Theo loved working with the Lino and its three dimensional feel. The black and white print also allowed him to experiment with color. The Lino cut is completed and only a limited edition Lino prints are made and hand printed by the artist on 300 gram 50% cotton paper and then individually hand colored with acrylic. The Original Lino is colored in oil and is also sold. This unique practice ensures exclusivity as a very limited edition is available to the local and international market. Theo’s work is at all times represented by many galleries countrywide.

The exhibition ends 24 May 2012.

John Moore Exhibition at the SA Print Gallery

Left: Purple Crested Loerie (colour woodblock, ed of 21, 2002), Right: Circle of Elders (Linocut, ed of 10, 2002)
Be sure not to miss conceptual wildlife artist John Moore's current show at the SA Print Gallery. These particular works have never been exhibited in Cape Town before. On show are a selection of John Moore's woodcuts, etchings and lithographs.

John's exceptionally detailed and realistic works are depictions of wildlife and the poignant plight of endangered species. This is at a time when there is urgent need to change our attitude to the environment and nature, which John feels passionate about. His style contains elements of surrealism and traditional naturalism which merge into thoughtful reflections of our age. John believes his work assists the viewer to find their own interpretation and allows the work to speak to them personally. The imagery often includes references to the Khoi-San - which he believes are the ‘first people' of the Southern African continent. This evocative body of work is where the human and the spirit world meet. To read more and see more of John Moore's work click here

The show runs until 26 April.

Local Artists, Local Friends

Fat Tuesday in Kloof is currently hosting an exhibition showcasing two local artists, Sue Whitmore and Anne Cleveland.

Sue Whitmore's exhibit is entitled "Carpe Diem", and was inspired by the love of life that her son brought into her home. She says "As I grow older and hopefully wiser, I have started to notice the incredible value of innocence, of seizing the moment and living it with the abandonment of pure, unfettered enthusiasm."

"The Conservation of Wetlands" is the theme of Anne Cleveland's contribution, which clearly displays her deep love and appreciation of the birds endemic to these threatened habitats. She uses a sure touch and a fine eye to bring these beautiful birds to our notice.

This exhibit is now on, and the gallery will be hosting a walk-through tomorrow morning, Saturday 19 November at 10am.

And, once you've admired the amazing artwork, Bellevue Cafe can offer an equally amazing coffee, tea or lunch, to make your visit complete.

Fat Tuesday is at Bellevue Campus, 5 Bellevue Road, Kloof, and you can contact them on 031 717 2785 or shannon@fattuesday.co.za.
